How long does a printed QR code last?
Short answer
Materials and Durability
| Material | Environment | Rough Durability |
|---|---|---|
| Paper sticker | Indoor, dry | Years |
| Paper sticker | Outdoor | Weeks to months |
| Plastic label with UV protection | Outdoor | Several years |
| Industrial label | Oil, cleaners, heat | Many years |
| Laser engraving on metal | Nearly all | Decades |
| Direct print on packaging | Retail | Packaging lifespan |
What Destroys Codes
- UV radiation. Fades print ink, reduces contrast.
- Abrasion. Frequently touched areas.
- Cleaning agents. Especially in food and medical technology.
- Temperature changes. Dissolves adhesive.
Use Higher Error Correction
QR codes carry error correction data in four levels. According to DENSO WAVE, the inventor of the QR code, this allows restoration of:
| Level | Restorable |
|---|---|
| L | up to 7 % |
| M | up to 15 % |
| Q | up to 25 % |
| H | up to 30 % |
Use level H in harsh conditions. A code that is 30 % dirty or damaged can still be read. This costs nothing except a bit more space and is the most effective single measure.
The Other Limiting Factor
The target. A perfectly preserved code is useless if the address behind it no longer exists.
For long-lasting products this means:
- Own domain for redirection
- Check redirection during every website redesign
- Maintain a list of all active codes
- When a product is discontinued, do not disable it but redirect to an archive page
The last point is almost always forgotten and is the most common reason for dead codes on still-functional devices.
Key facts
- Most durable material
- Laser engraving on metal
- Error correction level H
- up to 30 % restorable
- Most common cause of dead codes
- Disabled target page
