How to Choose a Software Service Provider?
Short answer
Four Significant Criteria
1. References to Call
Not just logos on a website. Ask if you can speak with a customer – and ask them what did not go well. Every real project has such issues. If someone cannot name any, they were not involved.
2. An Offer with Boundaries
A good offer states what is not included. If this part is missing, the boundaries will become a point of contention later.
3. Operating Costs After Launch
What does the system cost in the second year? If someone cannot answer this, they have not considered the operation – and you will pay for it later as an emergency.
4. Willingness to Advise Against
The best criterion. A service provider who is enthusiastic about every project is selling. One who says, "there is a product for that, which will suffice for you," is thinking ahead.
Warning Signs
- Fixed price before anyone knows the processes
- No access to the repository during the project
- Only one person knows the project
- Questions about operating and maintenance costs are avoided
- Very short response times are promised without inquiring about your requirements
What You Need to Contribute
Even the best selection cannot save a project where no one is making decisions. Before you look for a service provider, clarify: Who is responsible on our side, and how much time does this person have for it?
The honest answer to this question says more about the project's success than any offer.
