Expert knowledge for digital decisions
What constitutes a good handover?
Short answer
The List
1. Repository Access
Not only during handover – ideally with read access from day one.
2. Operational Documentation
How is it delivered? What dependencies exist? What does a backup look like, how is a restoration performed? What needs to be regularly updated?
3. Access Data in Your Possession
Domain, hosting account, certificates, service accounts. Registered to your company, even if the service provider manages them.
4. Environment Description
Which server settings, which versions, which environment variables. Without this, the system cannot be set up anywhere else.
5. Training
For users, not for IT. Best kept short and conducted on the actual system, not as a presentation.
What Additional Help Is Useful
A recording of the training. New employees can watch it later – this saves more time over years than any manual.
How to Recognize a Poor Handover
It consists of a ZIP file and an email. If after the handover only the service provider can start the system, it wasn't a good one.
