What is the E-Prescription and what does it mean for Practices?

Short answer

The E-Prescription replaces the pink paper voucher with an electronic prescription, which is provided via the Telematics Infrastructure and retrieved at the pharmacy. For practices, it is mandatory – the issuance takes place from the practice management system, signed with the electronic health profession certificate.

How it works

  1. The prescription is created in the practice management system
  2. Signature with the electronic health profession certificate
  3. Provision via the Telematics Infrastructure
  4. Redemption at the pharmacy – via the health card, the app or a printout with a code

What changes for the practice

The signature. Every prescription must be electronically signed. A batch signature of multiple prescriptions is common, but saves time only if placed sensibly in the process.

Dependency on technology. If TI access fails, issuance is disrupted. An alternative procedure must be known.

Consultation. Patients ask questions – how to redeem the prescription, what happens if a smartphone is lost. This costs time at the reception.

The printout

A paper printout with a printed code remains possible and is the usual way for patients without a smartphone. The printout is not a prescription in the traditional sense, but an access key to the electronic prescription.

For software vendors

Issuing E-Prescriptions requires an approved practice management system with TI connectivity. A general practice software cannot offer this function without approval.

HealthFusion cannot do this – see article on Telematics Infrastructure.

The legal and technical framework is continuously evolving. Check the current status before making decisions.
