Expert knowledge for digital decisions
Can you operate an AI server without your own IT department?
Short answer
What ongoing operation means
- Install security updates
- Monitor if the service is reachable
- Intervene in case of disruptions
- Keep an eye on storage space
- Maintain model and software versions
This is not a major weekly effort – but a regular one. Exactly this is where it fails in small companies: There is no one whose responsibility it is.
The three realistic options
1. Managed server from a service provider. You rent hardware and maintenance. Data remains in the desired legal jurisdiction, and someone else takes care of it. For most small and medium-sized enterprises, the most sensible option.
2. Cloud provider with processing in the EU. No operation, but processing under contract. For non-critical data, the simplest solution.
3. Own server. Only if someone in the company takes on the task – with a time budget, not as a side job.
The honest question
Who will do it when the person is on vacation? If there is no answer to this, option 1 or 2 is the right choice.
A common misconception
A server is purchased because it seems cheaper than a subscription at first. After a year, an outdated installation runs – no one wants to touch it. The supposed cost advantage then becomes a security risk.
This recommendation applies even if it contradicts a project.
