What you should ask

Who is my contact person? By name, not "our team".

Who writes the code? At smaller service providers, often the same person – that is acceptable, but should be known.

What happens in case of illness or vacation? The most important question. Does at least one other person know the project?

Is work outsourced? If parts are assigned to third parties, you should know this – also regarding data processing, if data is involved.

Why this is not an impolite question

It is due diligence. A service provider who interprets it as distrust has already answered it.

What helps against person dependency

• Access to the repository from the beginning
• Documentation as a deliverable, not an afterthought
• Automated tests that retain knowledge in the code
• Common technologies instead of niche solutions

These four points are more effective than any promises.
